Originating in Xian, China and ending in Europe, it was the ancient highway for the exchange of goods – frankincense, dates and glass from the west and silk and porcelain from the east. But beyond goods, it was also a route for the exchange of ideas, arts and religions. Mighty empires rose and fell along the route leaving behind magnificent cities and architecture. Along the silk road, caravans of merchants traveled through lands inhabited, to this day, by nomadic tribes.
